Locked out far from home — what a locksmith can actually do

Few situations trigger the kind of panic you feel when you realise you have no vehicle key — and you are not at home. The good news is that this is almost never a dead end. First — calm down and check the basics

Before you call anyone, check the obvious: pockets, bag, whether the key was left in the boot lock or dropped beside the seat. Surprisingly often a “lost” key is found in two minutes. If it truly is gone, the next step is not breaking a window — it is calling a locksmith.

What a locksmith can do when you have no key

Cutting a key “from scratch” is work we do regularly. For most vehicles it is possible to make a brand-new key and code it to work with your vehicle, even when you have no existing copy. This requires proof of ownership and some time, but it is far cheaper and less painful than the panicked alternative.

• Coding the transponder and remote — so the new key works with both the lock and the immobiliser.

What you need to bring

To cut a new key you need proof that the vehicle is yours — the registration and an ID document. This is not a formality that gets in the way, but a protection for all of us: nobody wants just anyone to be able to make a key for someone else’s vehicle. Once the paperwork is in order, the rest is our job.
