How to choose the right lock, key and security for your premises
When people ask us “which is the best lock,” the answer always starts with a question: what are you protecting, and from what? A lock for a basement door and a lock for a ground-floor apartment entrance are not the same story. The goal is not to sell the most expensive cylinder, but to hit the right level — enough protection to deter a burglar, without paying for something you do not need in practice.
Security grades — what they actually mean
Locks and cylinders are sorted into security grades that indicate how long and how hard they resist a break-in attempt. A higher grade means stronger materials and more built-in protections. For most apartments the middle grade is an excellent balance of price and security; for exposed premises, ground floors and businesses with valuable goods, it makes sense to go higher.
Three protections worth paying attention to
- Anti-drill protection — hardened inserts in the cylinder stop a drill bit, the most common burglar’s tool.
- Anti-snap protection — the cylinder is built to break at a controlled point and stay locked, instead of snapping open.
- Anti-copy protection — a profile with a control card prevents anyone from copying your key without your knowledge.
Apartment, house or business — different needs
An apartment on an upper floor has a different risk from a house with a yard entrance or a business with a shopfront. For apartments we usually recommend a good middle-to-higher grade cylinder with anti-snap protection. For houses we also look at side entrances, because a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
