Car coding: what can be unlocked on the vehicle you already own

A customer waits while we cut a key, looks at the car parked beside him and asks: “Same model, same year — how does his have something mine does not?” We hear that almost every week. The answer is almost never that the other car is a richer version. More often both owners bought the same hardware, and only one of them has it switched on.

What coding is — and what it definitely is not

Coding means changing settings inside computers the vehicle already has. Nothing is added, no wires are soldered and no new part goes in — what the factory left switched off in software is simply switched on.

  • Coding changes settings in the modules already fitted to the car. The hardware is untouched.
  • Chip tuning is something else entirely — it alters how the engine runs. That is not what this is, and not what we are describing here.
  • It is done with original diagnostics, the same class of equipment a franchised dealer uses.

The distinction matters because people mix the two up constantly, and the answer about warranty and risk depends on which one you mean. Coding does not touch the engine, does not change fuel consumption and does not add power.

What is most often unlocked

The list depends on the make, the model year and the market the car was built for. These are the options that most often turn out to be possible:

  • Apple CarPlay across the whole display, instead of the portion the factory limits it to.
  • Active lane keeping — on cars that already have the camera while the option sits switched off.
  • A spatial view from the parking cameras, instead of a plain rear-camera image.
  • Coming-home and leaving-home lighting.
  • Closing windows and roof from the remote.
  • Fresh maps on the factory navigation, without replacing the unit.

Why it was switched off in the first place

It is neither a fault nor an oversight. It is cheaper for a manufacturer to fit the same hardware to every car in a series and separate the equipment packages in software. Markets differ in their regulations too, so the same option ships enabled in one country and disabled in another. The result is that a great many cars carry a camera, a sensor or a module their owner has never used.

What cannot be done — and why you should hear it up front

This is the part nobody likes to put in writing, and to us it is the most important. Coding cannot create what is not physically there.

  • If the car has no camera, there is no camera view. No software can conjure up a lens.
  • Some modules are locked by the manufacturer and do not open even to original diagnostics.
  • An option that exists on one model year is missing on another. That is only known reliably once the vehicle is read.

So the first step is never coding, it is reading the car. Only when we can see what is genuinely fitted can we say what is worth doing. An honest “this one cannot be done on your car” is worth more than an attempt that leaves a fault stored in a module.

Is it visible, and what about the warranty

Let us be straight about it: the change is recorded in the module, and a franchised workshop can see that something was altered. Settings can be returned to factory whenever you want. If the car is still under manufacturer warranty, the honest advice is to ask your dealer first — we are not going to tell you it leaves no trace, because that would not be true.

How we do it

Keno works as an official Code Expert partner, on vehicles from the VW, BMW and Mercedes-Benz groups. The procedure never changes: the car is read with original diagnostics, you are told what is possible and what is not, and only then is anything done. Before you leave, we show you how to use every option that was switched on.

The workshop is at Hajduk Veljkova 28 in Kraljevo. Keys and vehicle security are done at the same address, so if you need more than one thing you do not have to drive around town.

Frequently asked questions

No. That is chip tuning, a different job that alters how the engine runs. Coding only touches equipment settings — lights, display, cameras, comfort features — and changes neither power nor consumption.
